Author: Trudi Canavan
I picked the first Trudi Canavan novel but any and all would qualify.
Trudi’s books all feature strong female characters as well as LGBT characters portrayed positively and as fully rounded characters integral to the story and universe.
More than that they are fantastic stories set in believable and complex universes and deserve to be on any list of great fantasy stories, and on any fantasy readers bed side table.
Agree on this books series, but I’d put it under ‘YA and Children’s Fantasy’, because it’s written as such :)
Thanks! I added it to that category :)
I have just read this trilogy and I have to say that, while Canavan is an engaging author, her work is decidedly non-feminist. The protagonist is the *only* major female character in the entire series. Almost every other female character is primarily defined as a mother, lover, or servant. And the protagonist almost never drives the story; she is constantly reacting to the decisions of the swarm of powerful male characters she is surrounded by. She is constantly unsure of herself, a wilting flower next to the pillars of confidence that are nearly every male character. And to add the final insult, near the end she falls head-over-heels in love with not only the single most powerful male character (of course), but one who is also nearly twice her age. Canavan should be applauded for including a LGBT-friendly arc, but from a feminist perspective she fails spectacularly.
Hmm, you have some points, and it’s been a while since I read the series myself, but I think the protagonist was still portrayed as someone who stands firm in her own opinions. She faces a lot of prejudice and bullying but doesn’t allow herself to be broken. She thinks with her own head, even if she’s not perhaps driving the story as much as one could wish. I think she was written as a person, not a “girl”, which is feministic in my opinion.
